In a conversation with a friend the topic of needing therapy came up. She is going through a lot of drama and hard times with the father of her unborn baby, and was hoping that I could console her and offer her some advice. Well my advice went something like this: “He sounds toxic to your life and the natural way to deal with something toxic is to get it out of your system. Also I think you need to see a therapist or get some anger management.” She agreed with my advice but as is often typical it went in one ear and out the other, but the conversation got me to thinking of how mental health issues are pretty much taboo in most urban inner city communities. This phenomenon is so ironic since poverty, oppression, and broken families plague these communities and what better atmosphere is there than this to cause mental illness to flourish?
